I’ve become a little bit obsessed with spas recently. The chance to chill out in serenity, relax in a Jacuzzi and turn the brain (and phone) off is an offer I can’t refuse. As the UK’s first health spa in the 1930s, Champneys has deservingly become a household name, renowned for its successful product line, luxurious day spas and rejuvenating overnight packages. So when I was invited by Spa Seekers to try out Champneys Tring, I didn’t hesitate at accepting.

Champneys Tring is nestled in 170 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, roughly 45 minutes on the train from Euston. Even on arrival, it was clear from the grand facade and Downton-esque driveway, that we were in for a luxurious treat.

Upon entering the main reception, we were checked in by the super-friendly staff, who then showed us to the drawing room for a spot of breakfast. Maintained to absolute perfection, the interior is beautifully decorated – Champneys has an understated luxury that doesn’t leave you feeling out of place in your dressing gown and flip flops. Fresh juices, coffee, tea, fresh fruit, yogurt pots and delicious canapes were all on offer before a tour of the facilities.

I was surprised at just how big the grounds were and whilst at first it seemed a little overwhelming, by the afternoon it felt like home. There are just so many facilities to explore – there really is something for everyone: a well-equipped Gym, fitness classes, indoor pools, sauna, steam room, thalassotherapy pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, numerous relaxation hideaways, gift shop and plenty of outdoor activities (weather permitting). One day was not enough to try everything!

Despite the freezing English weather we decided to head outside for a game of tennis. If I’ve learnt anything during my time at Champneys it’s that I’m no Andy Murray – me and Bobby spent more time trying to find the balls than actually playing! Tennis pro or not, I’d definitely worked up an appetite and luckily for me it was just in time for lunch…

Champneys philosophy is centred around health and wellbeing and our inclusive lunch complimented this perfectly. The buffet was everything I’d hoped it would be; full of fresh, nutritious food which left me feeling nourished and extremely satisfied.

All too quickly it was time for my inclusive treatment – a 50 minute Aromatherapy Associates full body massage. My therapist Alexa, guided me upstairs to a small treatment room and waited outside whilst I wriggled myself under the covers of the massage table. My therapist was extremely professional and I was able to completely relax listening to the quiet soothing music as she worked away every bit of tension in my body. I think it’s so important, especially this time of year to relax and recharge ahead of the busy festive period. I left my treatment feeling 100% more relaxed and peaceful.

Post-treatment we decided it was time to explore the spa. Despite being a Sunday, there were very few people around and even fewer had ventured in the cold to the outdoor jacuzzi. This was actually my favourite part. I can’t say the dash from the jacuzzi back indoors was as relaxing but the sauna quickly warmed us up!

We were allocated a slot for afternoon tea upon arrival, but as 3pm drew closer we both agreed that we weren’t ready for food just yet. I asked reception if we could change the time of our tea and the staff were super-accommodating with making ours a little later.

After another hour of relaxing in the spa we arrived at the Terrace Cafe, ready for afternoon tea. Unfortunately, this was the only aspect of our experience which let us down. The one staff member seemed confused and unable to cope with the amount of customers and when we were finally seated, our afternoon tea took over 40 minutes to come. Despite the long wait, the food was delicious! Not your typical afternoon tea, but in keeping with the balanced and healthy ethos of Champneys.

Despite the little hiccup towards the end of the day, I left Champneys feeling completely at ease. It’s amazing the effect one day of relaxation can have on your mind and body. If you’re looking for a perfect gift for a loved one this Christmas – or know someone that needs pampering, I would definitely recommend a visit. To find out more or to book a spa day click here.

Thank you to Champneys for hosting us! Our day stay was provided complimentary but as always, this would never affect my opinions, which are completely my own!

Have you ever visited a Champneys resort – or would you like to?
